Fascia Board: What It Actually Does, and Why It Rots

What Fascia Board Actually Is
Fascia is the vertical board that caps the ends of your roof rafters or trusses, running the length of the eave. It's a different piece than the soffit, which is the horizontal panel closing off the underside of the overhang — fascia is the face you see, soffit is the ceiling underneath it. There's often a distinction worth knowing between structural sub-fascia (rough framing lumber that's actually part of the roof structure) and the finish fascia board fastened over it, which is more of a trim piece. The real hands-on test is pressing a flathead screwdriver into the board at corners, behind hangers, and along the bottom edge — solid wood resists the point, rotted wood lets it sink in with little pressure. What a ladder inspection can't tell you is how far the damage extends behind the visible face, into the rafter tails or the sub-fascia — that's usually only obvious once a section of gutter or trim actually comes off.
Two Ways It Rots, Not Just One

There's a second path worth knowing about: poor attic ventilation can let warm, moist air condense on the roof framing at the eave from the inside, contributing to rot in that same area from the back side. Whether this is gutter-company work, roofing work, or carpentry work genuinely depends on scope — gutter companies often handle smaller sections since they're already working at the fascia line and gutter overflow is frequently the actual cause, while larger structural runs or rafter-tail repair are more of a carpentry or general-contractor job.
What to Actually Check
- Press-test suspicious spots with a screwdriver rather than relying on how the paint looks alone
- Check behind and underneath gutter hangers specifically, since that's where moisture sits longest
- If one section feels soft, assume the damage likely extends further than what's visible from the ground
- If you're already having gutters replaced, that's a reasonable time to have the fascia underneath actually inspected, not just covered over
