Gable Vents: The Older-Style Ventilation Still on a Lot of Roofs

I've already covered soffit vents as the intake half of attic ventilation. Gable vents are a different, older approach entirely — still common on plenty of houses in this area — and they work by a completely different mechanism than soffit and ridge vents do.

How a Gable Vent Actually Works

A gable vent sits in the triangular wall at the gable end of the house, near the roof peak. Unlike soffit and ridge vents, which rely on the stack effect — warm air naturally rising and exiting near the ridge while cool air enters low at the eave — a gable vent is wind-driven. With a pair of gable vents on opposite ends of the house, whichever one faces the prevailing wind acts as intake, and the downwind one acts as exhaust. When the wind blows parallel to the ridge instead, that cross-ventilation gets a lot less effective.

Why It's Considered an Older Approach Now

Martin Holladay, editor at the respected building-science publication GreenBuildingAdvisor, is direct about this: for two or three decades now, experts have been advising builders against gable vents, in favor of continuous soffit-to-ridge systems instead. The federal Building America Solution Center frames the same shift the same way — continuous soffit and ridge venting is the modern standard, with gable vents falling out of favor for new construction.

The Real Problem: Mixing Gable Vents With a Ridge Vent

This is the detail that actually matters if your house has both, or if you're adding a ridge vent to a house that already has gable vents. Multiple credible sources agree on this, not just one outlier opinion: the Building America Solution Center explains that gable vents sitting up near ridge height can "short-circuit" the airflow, pulling air in or pushing it out at the gable instead of the intended soffit-to-ridge path — which can leave other parts of the attic poorly ventilated even though air is technically moving. GAF's own installation instructions for their ridge vent product are explicit: do not use it together with gable-end vents, wind turbines, or other exhaust vents. Roofing trade press repeats the same guidance. I want to be precise here, though — I looked into a claim that mixing vent types is a building-code violation, and I couldn't confirm that in the actual code language. The IRC's ventilation section sets ratio and placement requirements, but it doesn't specifically call out mixing vent types as a violation. This is a real, well-documented performance problem, not a code citation.

What to Do If You Have Both

The standard recommendation across manufacturer and trade sources is to seal off the gable vents once a ridge vent is installed — commonly by blocking them from the inside with plywood, or removing and properly patching them if you'd rather not keep the opening at all. If you like the look of a gable vent and want to keep it visible from outside, sealing it from the attic side while leaving the exterior louver in place is the real compromise some sources point to.
